Watch this fantastic Ted Talk by Linda Hill, a Harvard professor, to see how organisations can foster collaborative problem solving and creativity.
Linda shows that even though having a vision is important, it is actually the way leaders create the time and space for people to innovate that makes them great leaders. In her words, innovation takes a village, so leaders must build a sense of community and, importantly, ensure all voices are heard, as it is often those at the ‘bottom’ of the organisation that have some of the greatest ideas.
How this time and space can be created in a busy ward environment is a challenge, but one that needs to be addressed. It is important to find as many ways as possible to include all staff in these conversations. Perhaps one way of starting is to coach and mentor staff: We are all everyday leaders: https://www.ted.com/talks/drew_dudley_everyday_leadership
