Faced with almost certain death when a ship he was on was hit by a freak 60 foot wave he suddenly became aware of a renewed sense of purpose. Having survived, he backpacked through 50 countries to find out what this was.

An encounter with a child begging in India whom he asked “what would you most like?” The answer “a pencil” provided him with just that mission – build a movement of “citizen philanthropy” based on the determination of a parent to educate their child.

The results were remarkable.
